Supershortbreak
26 November, 2008

Hi guys! I am currently attending my final undergraduate semester in school and may only get to sporadically update this mobile phone photoblog for the meantime (or until I adjust to “schedules” like building up my mood to post, to write, to do schoolwork, to finish extracurricular work, etc).
I still photograph daily, though. My October to November 2008 photodiary pictures are here and here.
Also in my break, the Aleli Photodiary somehow got into this list of top 20 Manila photoblogs. Please visit it for more Manila photography coolness!
To those who have messaged/talked to me about this photoblog, thank you very much for appreciating my work :) These messages (even the negative ones) are among the best of motivators a blogger can have!
Be ready to scroll again–I will be back by the first week December!
Then I’m off to Cebu
27 October, 2008
To cut the story short: I wanted to escape Manila, be somewhere with people I haven’t been with for a long time, and, oh, to accompany someone on her first plane ride ^_~

Cebu Pacific was the cheapest way to go, and yes we were on time (down to the exact minute even) ^^. Hooray for my friend who works there and kept on selling me his company (haha!).
Since I only slept for an hour or so, I immediately fell asleep on the plane, forgetting that I was beside someone with a mild phobia of flying..

Yes, we brought a microwave to school for Sir A.

So much for that exam. I could answer it even if I didn’t study because I was able to read all the readings in the past anyway. :P
Anyway, let these pictures show you the “send-off” dinner/party/classics-movie-marathon by one of the best professors I ever had in the College of Mass Communication.
How so? I only read media ethics readings once, and listen to this professor go through concepts once, and somehow, I end up fondly remembering almost everything he told us in class!

Tadah! Newly-popped popcorn!

.."Naku, kung di pa ba matuwa si ___ sa hanep na cheddar cheese flavor na yan!"

Spaghetti -- now you see it..

...now you don't!

Signing up for a bet with the "devil". FYI, the entire class always took the one side :D

Film viewing: 3 classic films, a "special viewing" of someone's assassination... and 10pm and counting..

I’ve never had a better send-off in college :)

I’m going to miss having an excuse to wear lots of clothes to school! This prof had a no-sleeveless/no-plunging-neckline/no-above-the-knee-skirts/no-slippers/no-revealing-clothes rule, which is pretty known in UP where fashion is almost tantamount to freedom of expression.. giving us rules on what to wear? Only he can pull that off ^^;
10th CommRes Department Extension Project, I-Con, Investigating College Newspapers
29 September, 2008

The 10th CommRes Department Extension Project, I-Con, Investigating College Newspapers
As advised by Dr. Fernando Paragas (who ran off to practice with them right after our competition, where he was also our adviser.. and on a Sunday night, too! Talk about dedication! :P)

Enzo, my newfound Canon-buddy (haha!), on top of equipment shelves to get that perfect shot..
What they did as so reminiscent of what we did last semester with my batch heading our department’s extension project.
And I thought that that semester was the most difficult, with my Jap 11 7AM class (when you sleep at 2-3), and conference and study duties–but it’s actually THIS one! Thesis proposal, papers left and right, ENVI SCI 1 under the cool but hardcore-GE-EXAMinator Dr. Amador Argete, and my Raket Scientist degree.. LOL.
Comm Res majors who are younger than me and are reading this: In CommRes 165, be prepared to learn and experience SO MUCH of communication, research, UP, and LIFE–all in sacrifice of a significant loss of sleep in your lives.. :D
29th Manila International Bookfair
13 September, 2008

The 29th Manila International Bookfair has been a tradition I picked up from my dad who works in between marketing, distribution, and publishing. Some 12 years later, I’m still attending it! My taste in books has gotten more expensive, but at least, it has also gone local :P
As I quote the lead of my reaction paper for corporate communication class on this event:
The mention of “bookfair” evokes a happy excitement in me in all the years I’ve been attending it. Visiting one for the first time as a third-grader, I chanced upon a pile of P25-books, all I could afford, and discovered rare activity books that might have led me to all that I’m ever interested in today. Ever since I made sure I had splurging money and enough time to look around the Manila Internal Bookfair (MIB), an event that in one way or another, have always lead me to many fortunate discoveries through books.
For the rainy days: cement-block footbridges
27 August, 2008
Loose cement blocks layered on each other made up these shared make-shift footbridges in the pedestrian lanes near the Trinoma mall. The rain wasn’t that horrible– it’s probably the drainage system working mismagics again!
Either way, people wouldn’t dare get their feet/shoes wet as seen here!

Lord Stow’s Egg tarts
15 March, 2008

You taste so wonderfully egg-y and cute—wait, can you actually taste cuteness? I can! It’s like Cooking Master Boy goddess-with-robes-bellowing aurora borealis in the air! I can hear the Korean Egg Song in my head when I bite unto the soft-custard-hard-thin-crusts of these egg tarts. They’re not sweet at all; they taste expensive. (Well, they are.)
But a certain grandfather goes first in eating more than one piece. When I truly like something, I’d rather give them away for another person to enjoy the experience. Like the egg tart; you eat it, I’m all good just watching you devour it like I would.
Simpsonize Me
25 July, 2007
Everyone’s gone past the Harry Potty mode…and I think we’re oogling at Simpsons now, with the Simpsons Movie airing soon.
One of the newsletters I’m subscribed to, Photojojo, referred me one of those personalize-me sites, this time, in theme with the Simpsons!
Diba addict kayo sa Simpsons nung high school? Then go get simpsonized!
Un nga lang, the site loads a little slow and you might have a hard time finding a decent-size head shot to upload.
This is who I think I will be in Simpsons– a geek chick in a very Pinay tan!
Heh =3
My Lola was a Beauty Queen

She used to be one of Pangasinan’s “pamato” and “darling” because her parents were teachers in one of the more prominent schools there.

Blueberry Cheesecake
25 July, 2007

I accompanied a Korean classmate named Maria to a merienda in Chocolate Kiss last Saturday.
I asked Maria about trivia things relating her beloved country–has she seen Rain or have been to the Full House house? Or does she know BoA and the other SMTown singers/artists? Did she watch “Koreanovelas” with passion as much as we Pinoys have done? Was Seoul as urban as it was 12 years ago (when I last “visited” it)? I think she was glad to have someone to practice conversational English with, and so was I. Foreigners (and young children) don’t usually question my English, which make me confident in speaking in that language, about any topic Ithink of. Oddly, co-Filipinos do care how you speak it which makes it uncomfortable to use sometimes. A bunch of us try to adopt some colloquial or “cono” slang just to appear better among those other English speakers.
Anyway, I felt stupid only able to take a picture of her bag ^^;;. I forgot asking for her picture because I was too excited learning about her country.
As a backgrounder, she’s 12 years older than me, a wielder of a masters degree , and already a journalism by profession. Maria’s fairly conversant in Korean (of course), French, English, and now understands a little Tagalog.
She said that she’s here in the country to familiarize herself with English and the Philippine culture, but I’m excited to imagine her to be some sort of undercover researcher in a study like “Korean in the Pinoy’s life”.
I’m always fascinated with foreigners, particularly East Asians, who tell me that they think our language is “very beautiful” because it has all these assortments of provincial languages like Bisaya, Ilocano, etc. I do accept our language just fine, but I don’t love it as a many loves the French language maybe. It’s through these foreigners opinions of us that I get the chance to finally appreciate Filipino stuff. Weird isn’t it?
At the strike of 5 pm (I told her I was meeting my family at 5), she asked me if I wanted some cake to take home. I said sure, the bluberry cheesecake here is wonderful and that she should take it home herself. She stood up the table and left her stuff (that’s why I was only able to take a picture of the bag) and 15 minutes later, was carrying this box that I could only assume was an entire Blueberry Cheesecake from Chocolate Kiss. Koreans in Quezon City/Philippines these days are reputable to be very generous and gallant, especially to new acquiantances so for a moment there I wasn’t as surprise as I thought I would be.

But still, ohmygosh, it was blueberry cheesecake! And this was my most favoritest cake in the world so she made me more happy than she probably intended to. I kept on telling her how we should be treating her because she was the visitor in this country, and that this was such an expensive gift and all that.
I realized, Maria and those the other Koreans I’ve spoken with out of a whim that they have pride in their country. This makes them do anything to make Korea look good to the world, just like treating foreigners like me with high respect. I could only figure out that they’re also as respectful to fellow citizens.
-
I’m just wondering though, if the Koreans are interested in Filipinos, how come they’re not as curious in knowing other Koreans here? I mean, they stick to their own circles even if they know that there are other Koreans living near their, like in the Katipunan/UP vicinity which I frequent. If I were the Pinoy in a new country, I would treat the co-Pinoy like a long-lost buddy or my dear kababayan!
Apparently, the Pinoy Kababayan concept is not very popular with Koreans who probably still choose to keep to their conservative values by keeping to themselves.
Pog
25 July, 2007
One Friday after class, while walking around the Casaa cafeteria hub of UP, I noticed three kids playing the Pog we kids used to obssess with over a decade ago.
But the thrill of collecting Coca Cola bottlecaps in exchange for these Pogs is gone now. I think these kids just bought them straight from some sari-sari store display.
And of course, hindi na si Pog ung character. Si Naruto na. Though they play a little amateurish because they don’t have this metal disk, called the ung “pamato” I think. What do you call that again?
I feel a little pity for kids these days, for not having the chance to feel the authentic collecting and playing mania that Coke and Pog brought to us Pinoy kids before ^^;
Vegetarian Doggy
19 July, 2007

I really could not believe it until I saw it.
My fourth-grade cousin Kashka’s Shitzu actually eats vegetables. As in eats an munches and crunches and digests vegetables obviously waaay better than my vegetable-phobic brother.
After shooting for an article I’m writing, Kashka offered Julio the dog the carrot that she was modeling with. And oh! To my surprise, the dog actually bit the carrot.
Later I discovered Julio, sitting under a potted plant and munching on those green leafy things on his own..

Of course, it must’ve been all that tender loving care by the owner that this doggy has officially become “health-conscious”.

And here are the happy happy pet owners. Obviously they didn’t force Julio to bite the big bright carrot.
…
I suddenly missed all my pet rabbits which I used to care for and feed the same way. As a 5th grader some years back, I used to have an amateur rabbit farm in my backyard. Feeding those generations of rabbits was absolute therapy! I miss having a pet! Luckily all the houses I frequent have animals I’ve always wanted to have ^^.
The Dashing Debutante!
19 July, 2007

It’s kuya’s birthday today! He’s legally old enough to live on his own! (Hah, he’s gonna hate me for posting pictures I took of him. I haven’t learned which proper angle to shoot him so that he’d liked my photos of him yet.)
He seems happy to have received two new shirts from me, which I secretly unearthed from someone else’s baul. I packaged/styled/dressed it up with his other fashion and style items so that it wouldn’t look cheap :D He does wears clothes like that (above) to school.
Kuya’s going to adopt me as some house pet by the time he’s working, and by the time I’m doing what I love to do the most (which means not earning money to support the fun graphic designed lifestyle I want to have, so kuya’s going to be my security/safety net ahaha).
If you want to greet him please drop by his blog! ^_^
